1930s German Pattern Magazines

I shouldn’t shop online with a hangover.  The rational part of my brain that reins in my urge to spend too much money seems to fail, and before I know what is happening, I have impulsively bought something too expensive that I would never normally .  Or three things.  The upshot of this though, is I now have three DIVINE late 1930s magazines, WITH patterns!

Here are just a few pages:

I was hopeful when they arrived that I wouldn’t be disappointed and boy, was I not, I nearly wept with joy and some of the dresses are making me feel giddy!

Unfortunately, acquiring these has increased my uncertainty of just what to make next.  Plus, I have no hangover excuse for the other 3 similar magazines that I found and bought in an obsessive ebay/web hunt yesterday!

I have at least begun tracing a pattern from one of the insanely confusing pattern sheets, so hopefully there will be some sewing happening soon.

  1. Wow, just Wow. WOW.I'm a huge fan of these great magazines and have made a few items up from them. If you have any troubles with deciphering them, here's a post on my blog that offers some helpful hints.

  2. Thanks, Anna, I had seen the post on your blog already, after a google seach I think, and bookmarked it! I have more pics to post and can't wait for the other mags to arrive. I've made things from vintage Burdas before so I am used to working with little or no instructions (other than the scant German ones that I can't understand!

  3. Both myself and my daughter think that these dresses are really pretty and can sympathise with your uncertainty as to your next possible project.I would plump for 48205,48206 or 42208 if it were me.Curiously I have just found at a local flea market a similar magazine from the 1950's that is French, but alas not actual patterns so I shall have to post pictures of that although I don't think to be honest the dresses are anywhere near as nice and there are no patterns pieces.

  4. I agree with your pattern choices, Urban Rustic, though unfortunately not ALL patterns are included, plus they are varying sizes.. but 48205 is included and about my size, so it's likely I shall make that soon. There is another magazine that I haven't scanned yet and is by far the best, so I'm making something from that first I think.

Please do post pics of your 50s mag, I love looking at dress images :)

I'm thinking of offering a giveaway in the form of tracing off a pattern of the winner's choice from these magazines, so look out for that soon!

  6. These are so very gorgeous! I'm particularly in love with the blue dress in the 4th image, not to mention the whole outfit. I'm definitely staying posted; can't wait to see what you make!

  9. These are AMAZING! I am loving the 30's stuff you're posting. I love the bodices-very lose at the top (I am small up there so I need all that help lol). Did you notice how the little girl's dress has some poorly-placed pockets? Not too good... I also don't like the 80's teal-purple-black combo nor the lady with the horns :o

  10. Erica, I love the 'horns' which is actually a bird hat! Even the styles that are not to my taste look gorgeous as I'm in love with the illustrations.
