More 1930s Patterns
I seem to have started collecting German pattern magazines, I can't resist buying them when I stumble across them (and by 'stumble across', I mean 'search endlessly for') though I have yet to make a thing from a single one.
Still, they sure are gorgeous to pore over and fritter away time that could be spent sewing the two dresses I'm halfway through.

ReplyDeleteWhat-I-Found - Actually, a lot of the patterns aren't that small, size 36" bust and above, the illustrations are misleading!
ReplyDeleteMarie - It's not that they're German, just that I happened to buy one, loved it and so started looking for more of the same as they come with so many patterns. There are also French titles too and Swedish... I might start trawling ebay for those as well!
Actually, two I just bought from 1939 have pictures of Hitler in, made me feel quite uncomfortable and glad I am unable to read the accompanying text.
I love the longer line dresses especially they look so stylish.

I love Deutsche Modenzeitung patterns but they go for ridiculous prices on german ebay (at least more than I´m willing to pay for a single magazine). So far I own 1 (in words: one). I think all german womens magazines from the late 30s and early 40s contain propaganda in some way. It´s either a photo or a text about higher education for girls or the hint to conserve "Volksgut" by doing this and that. I decided to ignore it, although "my first Hitler" in a fashion magazine gave me that Oops-moment too.
ReplyDeleteKatrin - They are fairly pricey, I've paid between £15-£30 each for them, but if you think of how much indidual patterns of this era can cost then it doesn't work out that expensive... that's what I keep telling myself. I have 18 now, I can't help myself. I have seen some on German ebay go for a few quid, but I only the ones I forget to bid on, yet have managed to find some on German antique sites for reasonable prices. Yes, I would imagine that propaganda of some sort would be prevalent, and it didn't bother me, especially as I can't understand it, but Hitler amongst the pretty dresses was a bit harder to ignore! I bid on a load of pattern sheets without the accompanying magazine once on Spanish ebay, there was very little in the description so few bids, and when I received them I realised they were from the National Socialist Frauenwarte Magazine :-/
